Michael Bay: Shameless and loving it
Halfway through “Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon,” I was smiling. Partly out joy, this being the most summery of summer blockbusters I’d seen … oh, this summer, at least. But partly out of amazement, too, at Michael Bay’s shamelessness.
I mean, seriously, how can a filmmaker be both an exploiter of the female form and try to pass off bad plotting as poitical correctness at its most blatant? The moment comes near the end when, just as one of the Autobots is kicking the ass of another, our Megan Fox-substitute — supermodel-turned-uh-actress? — Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, whispers Iagolike into the ear of one of the Decepticons.
Now, I have no problem with plot stretches. But this one is simply too much because it makes no sense. The bad bots are on the verge of winning everything, and one simple little suggestion is enough to make them ignore good sense and start fighting each other? Please.
It’s clear that Bay, with the help of screenwriter Ehren Kruger, is trying to make Huntinton-Whiteley’s character part of the action. I mean, you have Army commandos, intelligence agents, Bots of all shapes and sizes and even a weirdo or two (John Turturro is back), all working hard to avoid humankind from being subjugated … or worse.
But it’s our shapely Iago who, unaccountably, makes the difference. Hey, Michael Bay the feminist! He likes woman who look good and not only can shake but kick booty.
‘Tree of Life’ is a modern masterpiece
I’ve wanted a few days to write about Terrence Malick’s new movie “The Tree of Life.” That’s because I’m still … stunned. And, honestly, I’m a bit taken aback by that.
Look, Malick is not for everyone. My own wife, whose opinion I generally respect, is up and down on the guy. She loved “Badlands,” couldn’t stand his previous film, “The New World,” and her overall reaction to “The Tree of Life” was … well, meh. Even at Cannes, where it won the Palme d’Or, Malick’s new film reportedly drew as many boos as it did cheers.
I, however, have no such doubts. I think “The Tree of Life” is one of the most ambitious, most beautiful, most earnest attempts to look at the nature of existence I have ever seen. It is nothing less than Malick’s attempt to probe the very nature of what it means to be human, to live an existence limited both by time and information, one that offers us all the natural beauty we can handle even as it tortures us with emotional interiors that … want … answers … now.
Most of us find answers that work. Religion is one. Its cousin, philosphy, is another. Obsession with the world immediately before us is popular, too. As is connection with others, even though such connection can cause as much torture and pain as it provides relief.
“The Tree of Life” seems to be saying all of this. But it doesn’t say it in a simple, straightforward manner. It works as a meditation, as a dream within a dream, one that moves from 1950s Texas to the age of the dinosaurs to the timelessness of space, and it depends on a narration provided by characters speaking as if in a waking sleep or as if projecting thoughts to their future selves.
Many audience memberss are likely to emerge from “The Tree of Life” confused and maybe even a little angry. Some moviegoers across the country have even demanded their money back.
This ‘Green Lantern’ is a dim bulb
I’m not sure how Ryan Reynolds scored the lead role in “Green Lantern.” But other than his physical qualities – the guy must have 0 percent body fat – he doesn’t fit the role. He’s a one-note actor who, despite having starred in a couple dozen projects or more, hasn’t progressed beyond the mannered comic style he displayed in 2002′s “Van Wilder.”
“Green Lantern,” which as a comic book character dates back to 1940, tells the story of Hal Jordan (Reynolds), a test pilot who is haunted by the death of his own test-pilot father. When a member of the gang of galaxy super cops known as the Green Lantern Corps is mortally wounded by a mysterious entity known only as “The Parallax,” the dying ring-wearer is drawn to Earth – where the all-knowing ring itself chooses Jordan as its next wearer.
Only thing is, Jordan tends to shun responsibility. And orders. And, apparently, relationships, preferring to bed a new beauty each night rather than embrace anythng remotely resembling commitment. Thus, before he can face The Parallax he must face his own tortured self.
Blah-blah-blah … you’ve heard it all before. And you can guess what happens.
“Green Lantern” offers nothing new in the pantheon of superhero stories. Even the whole notion of Willpower vs. Fear that makes up the movie’s simple formula (Willpower equals Courage which trumps Fear) feels tired. And without any other characters worth mentioning – including Blake Lively as Jordan’s obligatory love interest – the movie depends mostly on Reynolds and its CGI effects.
Extravaganza of TV Party
Spending your leisure time watching TV and relaxing with your special friends is the most favorite way of partying these days. The US people are always big fans of traditional TV series. And now the UK crowd is also fascinated with the television parties. Usually the premise for this kind of party is chosen as simple means. You can easily organize this extraordinary event through social network or phone.
The special night should be first prepared with the perfect dinner with mouth watering food that the particular guests would like. It is always a bonanza to start with exotic snack. Crisps along with salsa dips are all time favorites. But if the host of the party has ample amount of time then they can prepare with care more delicious food in their kitchen. The BBQ is the most popular and preferred party but only disadvantage is that the person behind so much delicacy can never enjoy the match or movie because they have so much work to concentrate on. The furniture in the living room should be placed elegantly to offer total comfort to the guests. In case you have pets you need to shift them elsewhere.
You should place the TV in a nice area of your which allows every one of them to watch it clearly. It should be a memorable night at the end of the night. Watching TV should not create an experience of loneliness therefore it is essential to browse through the wide collections of program.
I want to live in this Woody Allen film
Some people will never forgive Woody Allen for … well, for a number of reasons. For being a New Yorker. For being a Jewish New Yorker. For putting himself in his own movies far longer than he should have. For being so self-consciously psychoanalytic. For sowing the ground that Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David ended up sowing.
Oh, and for cheating on his girlfriend, Mia Farrow, by sleeping with Farrow’s adopted stepdaughter, Soon-Yi Previn, a girl some 34 years his junior.
So many reasons, so much antipathy.
Thing is, throughout the whole mess, and onward since 1992, Allen has continued to make movies. And he’s improved, moving from his beloved New York to European locales such as London, Venice, Barcelona and, now, Paris. His film “Midnight in Paris,” in fact, shows that Allen has a lot in commin with another aging American filmmaker, Clint Eastwood.
Both are showing that, instead of dimming their skills, age may have enhanced them.
“Midnight In Paris” is ostensibly a fantasy about accepting who, what and where you are. But, in actuality, it is a love letter to Paris. Fully the first four minutes of the film is one glorious shot of Paris after the next.
A few of Allen’s films would make my top-100 films list, among them “Hannah and Her Sisters” and “Crimes and Misdemeanors.” I wouldn’t put “Midnight in Paris” in that category. But it is one of the best films I’ve seen of 2011.
‘Bridesmaids’ is women behaving comically
Months ago, I saw the trailer for “Bridesmaids.” I thought at the time that the movie looked hilarious. A bit gross, maybe a female variation on “The Hangover” movies. But still funny.
It is all of that. But that’s not everything “Bridesmaids” is. It’s also gross to the extreme (especially if you’re sensitive to food-poison scenes). And touching in a way that “The Hangover” movies can only dream of.
In fact, “Bridesmaids” is, overall, one of the best movies ever made by a “Saturday Night Live” cast member, Co-written by Kristen Wiig (along with Groundlings member Annie Mumolo), and starring Wiig and fellow SNL comic Maya Rudolph, “Bridesmaids” is a female buddy flick that is certainly as good as “Hangover: Part II,” if not part one.
What’s interesting is that it’s earned just a little more than half the dude buddy flick. The only reason I can see for this is that, as a culture, we’re more comfortable with men acting badly. Not so much our women. Something wrong with that

Streaming Films from LOVEFiLM
LOVEFiLM has already established itself as a revolutionary means of renting films and games, not from your local store, but from the internet. For a fixed monthly fee, LOVEFiLM will deliver to your doorstep the latest film releases. When you send them back, via freepost, a new one will appear at your door just a couple of days later. But LOVEFiLM have found a way to bypass even that, having adapted to the constantly updated world of the internet. You guessed it: LOVEFiLM even offer a direct streaming service online with their LOVEFiLM player.
The LOVEFiLM player works in the same way as many streaming video players on the internet, but it is limited by your membership package. The cheapest monthly deal, at £4.99, does not include any online streaming time. However, increase this by just £1 a month and 2 hours of streaming time is added to your package, and that’s enough for an average film. Unlimited online viewing starts at just £9.99 per month, and you don’t necessarily have to watch your chosen films on your laptop or computer. If you have a Playstation 3, the LOVEFiLM player is available online so you can watch any film included in your package on any television or monitor connected to the console.
Even if you haven’t signed up for a package with online streaming, or if your allotted duration of streaming has run out, LOVEFiLM also offer a pay per view service with the LOVEFiLM player. Individual films can be rented online for less than £2.50, meaning you can watch two films for under a fiver without leaving the comfort and convenience of your computer. Don’t be mistaken about the kinds of films this encompasses, either.
Admittedly, more recent releases cost more to rent, but all the latest titles of the year are present in LOVEFiLM’s catalogue, from child friendly antics in Disney’s Toy Story 3, to the mind blowing action epic of Christopher Nolan’s Inception, or science fiction and fantasy in James Cameron’s Avatar.

Venues for conference in London
I have a huge business all over the world and I travel a lot around the world for my business deals as well as for conferences. Every year I arranged the award ceremonies for my company staff members and this time I decided to arrange this ceremony in London and told my secretary to arrange for a venue hire in London. While I was browsing on the internet I chanced upon. I logged in to the website to know more and saw many venues on hire in London. I read all the information about the venues and was very much impressed with their quality venue services. I immediately downloaded the brochure to know more about it. I read all the terms and conditions and after long discussion with my secretary, I told her to hire a venue in London through the website. On the award ceremony day, we got the best services as they promised and everyone was impressed with the venue selection. Now I always recommend this website to anyone who wants to hire a venue in London.
